Rainey sports hall was funded by the Department of Education’s under their strict cost and space limits. It consists of a 4 court Hall, with a single storey block containing: 4 changing rooms, a classroom, fitness suite and ancillary accommodation, all wrapped in brick to match the original school. The building is illuminated with clerestory glazing minimising glare and providing natural cross ventilation. It is integrated into it setting by the careful retention of trees and hedgerows. The “garden wall” of the changing rooms faces the playing fields; while fitness suite facing the road, is fully glazed. The corner is cut back to form a covered area for gathering, overlooked by the staffroom at the entrance.
