2014 PERSPECTIVE Journal – On the Farm

PROJECT DETAILS
The site is located on the elevated site of a derelict cottage and byre. It overlooks the rolling hills of Fermanagh, South Tyrone and North Monaghan. Stately mature trees mark the site and there are wonderful distant views.

The new cottage was faithfully restored and a contemporary barn was added. The barn was twisted from the cottage to form a new sheltered entrance court. Both blocks are clearly expressed and are connected by a single storey glazed link. The cottage has been replicated and recreates the rich volumes one would expect in a property of this nature. The heights of the minor rooms are kept low while traditional ladders access loft spaces, which overlook the central living space.

The new build is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional barn, with metal standing seam roofing and smooth self-coloured render. Internally, the barn is more dynamic; an angular steel and glass stairs serves the first floor bedrooms and gallery spaces. A study overlooks the double height dining spaces. While a glass bridge accesses the master bedroom suite. The ground floor living spaces are open plan and large sliding doors allow for privacy. These spaces open directly onto the sheltered sunny court, where the owners can enjoy the fantastic views.
